Frequently Asked Questions
Is the IDEA Fund a grant or an equity investment?+
The IDEA Fund is a state-sponsored venture capital program that makes equity co-investments alongside private investors. It is NOT a grant program. MTC receives equity stock or convertible debt notes matching the terms of private lead investors.
What are the matching capital requirements?+
Every IDEA Fund award requires a third-party dollar-for-dollar matching private co-investment from private capital sources (angels, seed funds, VC funds).
Must my company be headquartered in Missouri?+
Yes. All IDEA Fund recipient companies must be headquartered in Missouri, registered to do business in Missouri, and maintain primary operations and employment within the state.
How long does a startup have to secure matching capital?+
Awarded companies have up to 6 months (with potential 6-month extension upon approval) from board approval to secure matching private co-investment and close the funding round.
